OpenAI Models Join Google Cloud, Giving Businesses a New Buying Route
Google Cloud customers can use existing spending commitments to buy OpenAI models, but access begins with a limited enterprise preview.
OpenAI and Google Cloud announced on October 21, 2026, that businesses will be able to buy OpenAI models and Codex through Google Cloud’s Model Garden and Marketplace. The move gives companies a new way to access the tools through a cloud provider they already use.
Google says customers with Google Cloud spending commitments can apply them to these purchases. The companies have not announced a price discount. Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, so the agreement adds a sales and access route rather than replacing that relationship.
Access starts with a private preview
Google says three models are in private preview for select enterprise customers:
- GPT-Astra
- GPT-6.1 Sol
- GPT-6 Luna
OpenAI said general availability for its models and Codex was planned for the weeks after the October 21 announcement. The preview means the service is not yet available to every Google Cloud customer.
A new procurement option, not a price cut
Customers will purchase the tools through Google Cloud Marketplace. For procurement teams, applying existing cloud spending commitments could make the buying process more convenient. It does not, on its own, mean the tools cost less.
Google Cloud also offers Google’s Gemini and other models. The agreement gives customers another option to evaluate, while creating a new enterprise sales channel for OpenAI. Reuters reported that the partnership comes amid competition among major cloud providers to distribute leading AI models.
The practical change is where businesses can buy and bill for OpenAI tools. Access starts with a limited preview, and Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner.
