OpenAI and Synopsys announced a multi-year partnership on September 30, 2026, to build GPT-Synopsys, an AI model designed to work with chip-design software. They plan to conduct joint research and sell the product, with a revenue-sharing framework linking their commercial returns to its success.

AI built to work with design tools

OpenAI will license Synopsys electronic design automation tools to develop the model. Synopsys says GPT-Synopsys is intended to help engineers explore more design options and improve chip performance, power use and size.

The planned workflow goes beyond asking a general-purpose chatbot for suggestions. The model is meant to use Synopsys tools, interpret their results and iterate on design tasks, with engineers reviewing the outputs.

Synopsys says the planned service will bundle computing capacity, the model and software licenses. The companies have not announced a launch date.

The commercial test is still ahead

The potential benefit for chipmakers is faster exploration of complex designs. But the September 30 announcement included no measured productivity gains or customer results. It also did not disclose the revenue-sharing terms.

Synopsys said early technology engagements with semiconductor customers were under way. The next milestone is whether those engagements demonstrate verified designs and enough measurable value to support a commercial product.

Reuters reported that the agreement includes revenue sharing as the companies develop the model. That gives both firms a stake in its commercialization, but any future returns will depend on adoption and results.

The deal sets out a commercial plan, but its value will depend on evidence that AI-assisted design delivers measurable gains.
