Google is beginning to narrow the model choices for Gemini users with personal accounts on October 9. As the rollout takes effect, accounts without an AI plan will have Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers will keep Flash-Lite and Flash, but lose Pro when their individual change takes effect.

Model access is separate from usage limits

The change affects which models appear in the Gemini model picker. It does not replace the service’s separate, compute-based usage limits, which can still restrict how much people use Gemini. 9to5Google and TechRadar have reported on the plan changes.

Unused usage allowance will not restore access to a model that is no longer included in an account’s plan. Google describes Flash-Lite as speed-focused, Flash as balancing speed and reasoning, and Pro as suited to demanding tasks such as complex math and coding.

What each plan includes

  • No AI plan: Flash-Lite as the change takes effect from October 9.
  • AI Plus: Flash-Lite and Flash. Google says subscribers will receive an email with their individual date for losing Pro access.
  • AI Pro and AI Ultra: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro remain available.

Google says changes for free accounts will “start to take effect” on October 9. That wording indicates a rollout, not a promise that every account will switch at the same moment. Google has not announced one public changeover date for AI Plus subscribers.

What changes for users

Flash-Lite remains available for quick everyday requests. But people who rely on Pro for harder reasoning, coding or math will need a plan that includes it once their account changes. AI Plus subscribers should check Google’s email for their timing.

The change creates another difference between Google’s personal plans, alongside their existing usage limits. Gemini is not disappearing from free accounts. The selection of models those users can choose is getting narrower.

Free personal accounts are being moved to Flash-Lite, while AI Plus users keep Flash but will lose Pro on an individually scheduled date.
