OpenAI’s Dots Keep Working After You Log Off, but Access Is Limited
OpenAI began rolling out Dots on September 29. Which plans can use them, and what does “always on” mean when task limits still apply?
OpenAI began rolling out Dots on September 29. The AI agents can continue working across connected apps after a user leaves the conversation. But access depends on plan, region and usage limits, so “always on” does not mean unlimited work.
Who can use Dots first?
OpenAI says Dots are rolling out gradually to:
- ChatGPT Pro users in supported markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
- Business Premium users in supported ChatGPT regions.
- Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare customers through a beta, if a workspace administrator enables it.
An eligible account may not show the feature immediately. For Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, access is not automatic for every employee.
A cloud computer, with limits
OpenAI says each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser. It can work toward goals around the clock and connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins. Users can message a Dot through ChatGPT and follow up through the mobile app after setup.
The first Dot is included at no extra charge with Pro or Business Premium, according to OpenAI. Those plans also include an allowance for deeper work. Tasks carried out through ChatGPT Work or Codex count toward the plans’ usual usage limits.
App access brings control questions
Users choose which apps to connect and can set approval rules for certain actions. OpenAI says sensitive steps, such as changing a password, remain with the user. The company also warns that Dots can make mistakes and advises users to review consequential work.
Disconnecting an app stops new access, but does not erase information the Dot has already retained, according to OpenAI’s Help Center. Deleting a Dot removes its own context. Files and conversations it created may remain stored separately.
OpenAI says it does not use Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace data to train its models by default. On personal plans, whether Dot conversations and work may be used for model improvement depends on the user’s settings.
The Associated Press reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman introduced Dots at the company’s September 29 developer conference. The agents are designed to handle ongoing tasks proactively.
Dots can carry work between conversations, but users still need to manage app permissions, approval rules and limited usage allowances.
